Annual Events

February 21, 2009: Geo-Cache Bash

Participants use GPS units to find hidden caches of treasure throughout the park. It's the perfect way to combine a love of techno-gadgets with a love of the outdoors.

10 am to 2 pm. In February, Cattail Cove State Park hosts an annual geo-caching treasure hunt. Geo Caching is related to orienteering where people find their way using a compass, except that Geo Caching takes advantage of personal, handheld Global Positioning Systems, commonly referred to as GPS, to seek out a specific location.

After a brief history of GPS is presented, including how GPS was conceived and the etiquette that goes along with the sport, participating attendees can choose to find more than 12 geo-cache sites in the park. Hidden caches are on various trails for hikers and several sites along the shoreline. Besides the event cache prizes, a raffle for a larger prize is typically offered.

The park encourages responsible Geo Caching practices in all natural settings, including limiting graffitti, digging, trash, illiegal off road vehicle use, vandalism, or caches near archeological sites or commercial use.
