21st Annual Verde River Days: September 26 & 27, 2009
Verde River Days promotes preservation and care of the environment by showcasing informative exhibits on the Verde River's riparian habitat. Events included hands-on activities, fishing, canoeing, live entertainment, 40-plus nature-based exhibits, sandcastle building, a menagerie of live animals, a climbing wall, canoe rides, nature hikes, as well as continuous entertainment and local food vendors. In addition, dozens of teardrop and vintage trailers of yesteryear were on exhibit throughout the weekend. Arizona State Parks Executive Director Renée Bahl gave a keynote address to the public on Saturday. Over 4,100 people attended the two day event!
Civil War re-enactors featuring Victorian era civilians and military personnel showcased weapons, gear, and encampments of the 1860s. Visitors had a chance to experience the sights and sounds of troops on parade, drilling, cannons firing, and large battle demonstrations both days.
On Saturday, Susan Wethington, Executive Director of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network (a science-based, project-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of hummingbird diversity and abundance throughout the Americas) presented a Hummingbird Conservation lecture. Interested visitors learned more about hummingbrid conservation efforts. For more information, visit hummonnet.org.
The lecture was made possible through a Together Green Audubon and Toyota North America grant.
On Sunday, the Verde River Citizens Alliance sponsored canoe rides down the Verde River. Thanks to all volunteers, vendors, exhibitors, bands, and community groups for making this event such a success!
