Aldo Leopold Centennial Event: August 15, 2009
This event featured an intro to Dutch oven cooking and a Dutch Oven Cook Off with local judges; food categories judged were: Breads, Dinners, and Desserts. Contestants started cooking at about 9:30 am, the judges made their rounds and judged the dishes after noon. The dishes were creative and presented very well, ranging from apple cobbler to pork ribs to pound cake—all cooked in the Dutch ovens! The day's events were topped off with Chatauqua speaker Kim Stone who did an exceptional job portraying Aldo Leopold in an interpretive talk. All contestants went home happy with prizes from the event. Visitors also enjoyed Ranger-led hikes.
The goal of the centennial celebration is to promote Leopold's vision that an ethical relationship with the land is essential to a vibrant and healthy community. The theme of this yearlong celebration is the relevance of Leopold's Land Ethic to how we address today's pressing environmental issues and make policy decisions about our future. Our goal is to engage the citizens of our community in the meaningful commitment to promise our children the inheritance of a beautiful and healthy physical environment.
