Arizona Site Steward Program
The Arizona Site Steward Program, currently with over 800 volunteers, is sponsored by SHPO, the Governor's Archaeology Advisory Commission (GAAC), and the public land managers of Arizona. Stewards monitor historic, prehistoric and paleontological sites for vandalism and report site's conditions to the appropriate land manager. Site Stewards are recruited, trained, and certified by the SHPO and the GAAC. For further information call Mary Estes at (602) 542-7143.
The Arizona Site Steward Program is nationally recognized and has won a number of awards for their dedication to the cause of archaeological site protection and public outreach. In April of 1996, the program was awarded the "Making a Difference" award by the Bureau of Land Management. In February of 1999, the program was given the Conservation Law Enforcement Association's "Michaelle Pitard Waynne Award for Excellence in Conservation Law Enforcement." And in July of 1999, Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, awarded the program the "Legacy of the Land" award from the Bureau of Land Management. The State Historic Preservation Office/Arizona State Parks is proud of the commitment our volunteers have for the preservation and protection of our state's heritage resources. In 2005, the Program was nationally recognized by the Society of American Archaeology and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Offices.
