(Phoenix, Arizona April 4, 2003) Each year, the Arizona Heritage Preservation Honor Awards recognize the people, organizations, and projects that represent outstanding achievements in preserving Arizonas prehistoric and historic resources. The awards are sponsored by the Arizona Preservation Foundation (APF) and the State Historic Preservation Office, a division of Arizona State Parks.

The grand award winner will be announced the night of the reception. On Friday, May 9th, the 2003 Heritage Preservation Honor Awards will be presented at the historic Masonic Temple located at 4th Avenue and Monroe in downtown Phoenix. The celebration will begin at 4:00 p.m. with hors doeuvres at the Central Arizona Power and Light building at the northwest corner of 3rd Avenue and Washington Street, now home to the Walker Café. (One hundred years ago this building was the site of the beginning of the Salt River Project). Moving to the Masonic Temple, the Awards Ceremony will commence at 6:30 p.m. with a program that showcases the Award winners and preservation projects. Delicious desserts and a chance to mingle with new and old friends of preservation follow the awards presentation. The event is part of Arizonas recognition of National Historic Preservation Week, which is celebrated from May 4-10, 2003.
Tickets to attend this year's Heritage Preservation Honor Awards are $35 for APF members and $40 for non-members. Historic Preservation Week 2003 will be celebrated in Arizona from May 4-10 this year. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has encouraged the celebration since 1971; this years theme is Cities, Suburbs and Countryside.
Casa Grande
May 5 City Council Meeting, 7pm. The mayor will read a proclamation, plaques will be presented for several properties, and the preservation commission will present local Landmark status to several properties recently listed on the National Register and local register. Flagstaff
May 10 - Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, 7pm. Brief Pictorial History of the Hispanic People in Flagstaff 1890s-1950s. Vince Lopez will present a pictorial history of Flagstaff's early Hispanic families, the places they lived, where they worked, and the buildings where social events took place. Phoenix
May 9 Walker Building and Masonic Temple, 4pm-9pm. Annual statewide Heritage Preservation Honor Awards reception sponsored by the Arizona Preservation Foundation and the State Historic Preservation Office/Arizona State Parks. The ten winners of the 2003 Honor Awards will be honored and the Grand Award Winner will be announced. The evening includes hors doeuvres, historic building tours, a presentation of the winners, and dessert and coffee.
