Volunteers are Needed at Sonoita Creek State Natural Area

(Phoenix, Arizona - September 26, 2007) - Dedicated volunteers are needed at Sonoita Creek State Natural Area. The Park is looking for individuals who care about protecting desert streams and the environment.

There are many interesting positions available for people with all types of skills. If you enjoy working with children, you might be interested in helping with the Healthy Water Education Program for third through sixth grade classes (must pass background check). Perhaps you enjoy spending time hiking trails, watching wildlife, talking with fellow hikers and keeping trails free of trash and debris. If this appeals to you, becoming a Trail Ambassador may be of interest.

Positions are also available to work in the Visitor Center answering questions and talking with folks about Patagonia Lake and Sonoita Creek. You might enjoy removing non-native species, such as tamarisk. If so, sign up with Sonoita Creek State Natural Area (SCSNA) to work on invasive species removal projects. SCSNA is also looking for hike leaders with at least intermediate level knowledge of local plants and animals to lead weekly nature or bird walks. For more information, please call the SCSNA Visitor Center at (520) 287-2791.

Sonoita Creek State Natural Area (SCSNA) is Arizona State Parks' most recently opened park. SCSNA, in partnership with Arizona Game and Fish, encompasses nearly 10,000 acres and has been set aside to protect Sonoita Creek and its watershed. Low impact recreational activities such as hiking, horseback riding and wildlife watching are available along the 20-mile trail system. In addition, three backcountry campsites allow visitors to spend more time exploring the Natural Area. SCSNA also operates a variety of educational programs and Ranger-led hikes at the Visitor Center located in Patagonia Lake State Park.
