Tubac Presidio State Historic Park's Anza Days October 20 & 21

(Phoenix, Arizona - September 26, 2007) - Tubac Presidio State Historic Park presents Juan Bautista de Anza Day on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A living history presentation on Anza's life will be on the main stage Saturday. On Sunday, Anza, portrayed by Don Garate of Tumacacori National Historical Park, and his troops will attend mass at Tumacacori mission and then will ride up the Anza Trail from Tumacacori Mission and arrive in Tubac about noon. He will give a presentation to the awaiting crowd on the journey that he, his troops and courageous settlers will begin to establish the Presidio at San Francisco in October 1775.

Activities both days include living history presentations by Los Tubaquenos, Tubac Presidio State Historic Park's volunteer group. There will also be music including mariachi music by Nogales High School Mariachi Apache, Black Mountain Singers, a group of young Tohono O'Odham men who sing traditional songs while playing a traditional drum, dancing by Dino Bones Ballet Folklorico, a group of young girls from the Rio Rico area sharing their Hispanic heritage.

There will also be programs for kids to learn about Anza's trek and the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. Margaret Styles, with Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, will be giving a special lecture entitled "Are We There Yet: Challenges Families Faced on the 1776 Anza Expedition."

For more information contact Tubac Presidio State Historic Park at (520) 398-2252. This year's event will be complimentary to the visiting public courtesy of the Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona who is sponsoring the fees for the event. Tubac Presidio State Historic Park is located at One Burruel Street in Tubac, Arizona. The park is located 45 miles south of Tucson on Interstate 19.

Anza Days commemorates the 1775-1776 trek by Spanish settlers and military under the leadership of Capt. Juan Batista de Anza II. They departed Tubac to establish the Presidio at San Francisco, California. Tubac, which grew up around the Spanish presidio built in 1752, is Arizona's first European settlement.
