CATTAIL COVE STATE PARK CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF STATE PARKS WITH "GEO-CACHE BASH" ON FEBRUARY 24

(Phoenix Arizona - January 24, 2007) - On Saturday, February 24th, Cattail Cove State Park will host a geo-caching treasure hunt to celebrate the State Parks 50th Anniversary.

The "Geo-cache Bash" starts at 10 a.m. with Dee Pfleger, Arizona Game and Fish Officer. Pfleger will explain how we receive the satellite signals that make Global Positio
ning System (GPS) receivers work. She'll also share the etiquette that goes along with the sport. To participate, attendees should bring their GPS unit with them and have a basic understanding of how their GPS unit works.

Afterward, attendees can choose from more than 15 geo-cache sites. There will be hidden caches on various trails for hikers and several sites along the shoreline; some sites will be accessible by boat. Attendees will receive a raffle ticket. Winners will be drawn at random for prizes. There will be a drawing for prizes including four grand prizes: three-nights camping at Cattail Cove State Park; two-nights in a cabin or yurt at Lyman Lake State Park; two-nights in a cabin at Roper Lake State Park, or a State Parks' annual standard pass.

The State Parks 50th Anniversary commemoration events will be held at 12:30 p.m. This will be a celebration with dignitaries and a cake cutting under the big tent on th
e beach. 50th Anniversary displays will also be featured including activities for children.

Geo-caching began in 2000 after the Defense Department stopped scrambling the signals beamed to GPS receivers from military satellites, making it easier for recreational users to find specific locations. It has since rapidly grown in popularity for both families and corporate groups. According to the geocaching.com website, there are currently 348,666 active caches nationwide. "Geo" for geography and "cache" for hidden stash provides a fun opportunity to enjoy and explore the outdoors using a (GPS) receiver.

Cattail Cove State Park is located on State Route 95, 15 miles south of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The beach, boat ramp and campsites offer a broad spectrum of activities for all to enjoy including swimming, fishing, or just lounging around and relaxing.

Regular day use park fees will be waived for this event. Regular day use park fees are $9
per vehicle for 1 to 4 adults and $2 per person fee for individuals and bicyclists. Camping sites are $21 for electric sites. Arizona State Park Annual Pass is available for $45 (some restrictions apply) and Premium Annual Pass is sold for $100. For more information call Cattail Cove State Park at (928) 855-1223.

This event is part of Arizona State Parks 50th Anniversary celebration held from October 2006 through December 2007. Special events will be held at each park such as a traditional mariachi festival, plein art shows, an apple festival, geocaching, solar energy celebrations and astronomy galas. Hiking, fishing, boating and mountain biking await those individuals with an adventurous attitude. Come uncover the many secret places and stories that are still to be found in Arizona's State Parks.

The Arizona State Parks Board was established in 1957 to acquire and manage park and cultural areas. Over the years, legislation has added other programs to A
rizona State Parks and as a result, the volunteer Board is responsible for a much broader spectrum of duties. These duties are related to historic preservation, archaeology, outdoor recreation, resource conservation/education and grant administration.
