Red Rock State Park Presents its First Sunday Program of the Year and Special Hikes

(Phoenix, Arizona - January 26, 2007) - Make plans for a day trip to Sedona and succumb to the natural beauty and cool winter weather.

The unique land-based ecosystem, closely associated with Oak Creek, provides the setting and the opportunity for Red Rock State Park to offer a
center for environmental education. With its diverse riparian habitat for plants and wildlife, Red Rock State Park offers special hikes and programs as a regular part of the park's environmental program.

Peter Booth, teacher and museum professional, will present "From the Trickster to the Braggart: Folktales of Arizona" on Sunday, February 4 at 2 p.m. in the Red Rock State Park theatre. Hear about the misadventures of Coyote, the wit of Spanish riddles, the anguish of "La Llorana," the "remarkable" deeds of Captain John Hance, and more. Arizona is blessed with several strong folktale traditions. These tales provide an insightful and entertaining way to explore Arizona's heritage. Each culture that calls Arizona home brings its own unique style of stories, legends, riddles and poems. Whether they teach a lesson, preserve history, pass on traditions, warn boys and girls to be good, or explain why things are, these stories always entertain. Enjoy these stori
es as you are introduced to the people who told them. This program is sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council and the Benefactors of Red Rock State Park. Advanced reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. Please call (928) 282-6907 for a reservation.

On Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m., volunteers will escort visitors on a guided geology hike through the park. Learn why the rocks are red, where they came from, where they are going and more. This hike includes the Eagle's Nest Trail for a great view of the park and the surrounding area. More than just a guided hike, this is an interpretive experience for the beginner as well as the advanced geologist. Bring the entire family and enjoy an afternoon with our knowledgeable volunteers as we explore the rock formations that create the scenic backdrop of Red Rock State Park. Visitors should bring their own water and wear suitable shoes or boots.

Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 a.m. will find bird enthusiasts
joining a naturalist for a "Guided Bird Walk." Beginners as well as advanced birders are welcome. Rangers recommend visitors bring their own binoculars. A limited number are available for loan from the park.

At 10 a.m. daily, visitors can join a naturalist on a guided nature walk that lasts 11&Mac218;2 to 2 hours and will introduce them to the riparian ecosystem of Oak Creek and other aspects of the park. Plants, wildlife, geology, history and archaeology are some of the subjects that may be discussed.

At 2 p.m. daily, the park hosts a ranger-or naturalist-led activity of approximately one-hour. Programs may include a nature-hike, a special presentation or an educational/nature video. This program may be an indoor or outdoor activity.

Red Rock State Park is located on the Lower Red Rock Loop Road off Hwy 89A, southwest of Sedona. Park hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitor Center hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
