Tours, Historical Presentations and More at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in January

(Phoenix, Arizona - January 4, 2007) - Riordan Mansion State Historic Park offers tours and historical presentations in January.

On January 9th at 12:15 p.m. at the Brown Bag Lunch Lecture, Jane Jackson of the National Park Service will present, "The Civilian Conservation Corps at Mt. Elden, 1938-1942." The land at the foot of Mt. Elden between the Peaks Ranger Station and Christensen Elementary was once home to enrollees in Franklin D. Roosevelt's popular New Deal program, the CCC. The camps in Flagstaff planted trees, thinned forests, built roads, fought fires, made trails and constructed many of the original structures that are still in use at Walnut Canyon and Wupatki National Monuments. Come learn about the work projects at the Mt. Elden camp and what life was like for CCC enrollees.

On January 27th at 7 p.m. at the Evening Slide Presentation Series, Donna Ashworth, Flagstaff historian and author, will present "What are you trying to do, be a hermit?" Please come help us celebrate the publication of the final book in the Small Mountain Quartet. Ashworth will talk about being a fire lookout, a theme common to all the books. She will be on hand to sign copies of "Piece by Piece: A Story of Women, Medicine and Wildfire" as well as her other books. Reservations are recommended due to limited availability.

Riordan Mansion State Historic Park will be open daily throughout the winter season. Winter hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riordan Mansion tours begin at the beginning of each hour. The first tour is at 11 a.m. and the last tour is at 4 p.m. Tour reservations are recommended.
