Start the New Year with a Breath of Fresh Air with Arizona State Parks and Trails!

PHOENIX – It’s a breath of fresh air to start the new year in the parks! Arizona State Parks and Trails is celebrating the 7th year in a national collaboration of all 50 state park systems to host guided "First Day Hikes" on New Year's Day.


The National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD) encourages everyone to begin the new year with a guided hike, walk, or tour in any of of the participating state parks across Arizona.


“Arizona's state parks offer unbeatable outdoor experiences the whole family can enjoy,” said Governor Ducey. “Kick off the new year with purpose by taking in Arizona's beauty, history, and natural wonder at an Arizona state park!”


Discover the incredible beauty of Arizona and hit the ground hiking for a new start in 2019. Explore one of Arizona’s unique trails, lakes, or historic places.


A full listing of First Day Hikes with locations, difficulty, length, terrain, and tips can be found at There are endless adventures to choose from, including desert hikes, bird walks, nature hikes, plus boat tours! You can even get snacks or hot chocolate on some hikes! Keep checking the website for updates or changes due to weather. Please note that some hikes require reservations and some don't allow dogs.
