Kartchner Caverns State Park Celebrates a New Trail

April 10, 2018

PHOENIX – Kartchner Caverns State Park is inviting the public to come celebrate its newest hiking trail and renovation of the existing Foothills Loop Trail at an Earth Day event on April 22.

On Sunday, April 22, at 10 a.m., the park will hold a grand opening event for the new Ocotillo Trail, followed by a guided hike for the public at 10:30 a.m. Built in response to visitor requests for additional and more challenging trails at Kartchner Caverns State Park, the new trail is 1.75 miles through the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains. There are two informational kiosks and three benches along the route. All trail work was completed with hand tools by the Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) trail crew and park staff. The trail was funded by a federal Recreational Trails grant.

This trail is considered challenging. If you plan to participate in the guided hike, please wear closed-toe shoes, dress appropriately for the weather and bring plenty of water.

The Recreational Trails Program provides funds to states in order to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized recreational trail uses. These funds benefit a wide range of recreation including hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, equestrian use, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, off-road motorcycling, all-terrain vehicle riding, four-wheel driving, or using other off-road motorized vehicles. The RTP funds come from the Federal Highway Trust Fund and represent a portion of the motor fuel excise tax collected from non-highway recreational fuel use: fuel used for off-highway recreation by snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles, and off-highway light trucks.

The cost of the event is the park entrance fee of $7 per vehicle. For more information, visit AZStateParks.com/Kartchner. While you’re at the park, take advantage of the guided tours inside the cave for an additional fee, but please make advance reservations at 1-877-MY-PARKS or AZStateParks.com.
